To the Anglo-Saxons this rune was known as Peoro and in the commun alphabet it is the letter "P"
As the words of the rune poem above indicate, this rune is primarily associated with mysteries and the amusement that results from their revelation. However, there is reason to belive that this part of the poem is a mistranslation, and that it is the wives of the warriors, and not the warriors, who take such joy in the revelation of secrets. On this feminine note, Pertho is connected with birth and death, and thus with beginnings and endings of all kinds. The mysteries of the ocult, and of what lies before and after life, are related ideas. Another side to the rune is its association with gaming, and the very shape of the rune suggests a dice cup. The word "Pertho" is said to mean a pawn or gaming piece, so playing the game, and winning and losing, are powerful concepts relating to this fateful rune.
